Description:

Abstract: The Mobile Home Parks shapefile contains locations that represent mobile home, residential trailer, and recreational vehicle (RV) parks within the Continental United States and Alaska. The people residing in these housing types are the most vulnerable residential population to hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding and other natural disasters. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 31% of the people that perished in tornadoes between 2009 and 2011 were residing in or fleeing from mobile homes. An inventory of mobile home park locations and the number of mobile homes within those parks is, therefore, essential for emergency preparedness, response, and evacuation.

Purpose: This shapefile captures mobile home park locations (to include recreational vehicle (RV) parks) for the Homeland Infrastructure Foundation Level Data (HIFLD) database (https://gii.dhs.gov/HIFLD). This shapefile was manually converted from its original feature class format by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) Homeland Security Infrastructure Program (HSIP) Team to mitigate automated conversion errors.

Supplemental Information: Time period date range corresponds to the date range covered by the SOURCE_DATE field.

Process Description:

Authoritative data sources are identified through open source research. That data is then acquired and transformed into a usable data format. The properly formatted data then goes through preprocessing steps that includes a geocoding operation to give spatial context to the data. The data goes through further refinement using remote sensing techniques. Data is also collected through image processing techniques. After preprocessing, every record goes through a review process and each point is moved to a facility based on-entity location based on interpretation of the best available imagery and open source information. The VAL_DATE field indicates the date in which the review step took place. Validated mobile home park locations obtained from image processing techniques are reverse geocoded to populate the ADDRESS, CITY, STATE, and ZIP fields at a tolerance of 100 meters.
