Abstract: Dam-Lines in the United States This dataset is provided as a polyline shapefile. According to the HSIP Tiger Team Report, a dam is defined as a "water barrier or an embankment built across the course of a stream or into a body of water to control and/or to impound the flow of water (breakwater, dike, jetty)." This dataset is based on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) National Inventory of Dams (NID) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). Records in the NID attributed as "Dams" were extracted by TGS under the classification of a maximum capacity of at least 2800 acre feet and/or classified as a "High Hazard" by using the query (([max_stor]>=2800) or ([hazard]="H")). Dam locations were digitized using any combination of ortho imagery, topographic DRGs, NAVTEQ streets, NHD flowlines, NHD landmarklines, TIGER hydrography, contact with authoritative sources or web research. A line was created by tracing the crest of the dam using referencing imagery and the NHD flowlines. Entities classified as both MaxCapacity and High Hazard are represented once. Text fields in this dataset have been set to all upper case to facilitate consistent database engine search results. All diacritics (e.g., the German umlaut or the Spanish tilde) have been replaced with their closest equivalent English character to facilitate use with database systems that may not support diacritics. No entities for American Samoa, District of Columbia, the Northern Mariana Islands or the Virgin Islands are included in this dataset. The currentness of this dataset is indicated by the [GEODATE] attribute. Based upon this attribute the oldest record dates from 01/18/2007 and the newest record dates from 02/06/2009.
Purpose: Homeland Security Use Cases: Use cases describe how the data may be used and help to define and clarify requirements. 1) In the event of a threat against the dams infrastructure, this dataset may be used to locate dams needing protection. 2) An accident has occurred at a dam and emergency medical personnel / rescue personnel must quickly deploy to the dam. 3) A resource for situational awareness planning and response for federal government events
Supplemental Information: If you are using this dataset as a shapefile, please be aware that it was converted from a Geodatabase. As a result, this shapefile may have attribution and metadata errors resulting from the conversion process. The following are known issues: null values may have been changed to 0s (zeros) or to blank values, numbers (including latitude and longitude) may have been rounded up or down, there may be issues with Unicode character strings, and time cannot be stored in a date field. Field names may have been truncated to no longer than 10 characters or completely changed, lengthy string attributes may have been truncated to 254 characters, and attribute columns may have been deleted. Shapefiles do not support coded domains and subtypes therefore the original file geodatabase attribution and metadata information for coded domains and subtypes could be incorrect or missing in the shapefile version. Attribute Definition: The official NID identification number for the dam, known formerly as the National ID. This is a required field, and must have an entry for each dam included in the NID. This field is used as the unique identifier for each dam record. The first two characters of the identity are the state two-letter abbreviation, based on the location of the dam. The last five characters of the identity are a unique number (AB#####). > The NID ID is the Corps Identification Number assigned to each dam in the 1995-96 NID update, under the National Dam Inspection Program (P.L. 92-367). Once assigned, this number should be not changed. However, the following guidelines are provided for assignment of ID numbers for new dams. Each new dam will be assigned an NID ID number by the state or federal coordinator. NID ID numbers will not be reused. If a dam is retired or is otherwise not longer in existence, that ID number is retired. The state coordinator is responsible for assigning ID numbers for all dams, regardless of ownership. The numbers may not necessarily be continuous, because of a previously established scheme which assigned certain number ranges to federal agencies. Continued use of this numbering scheme for new dams is at the discretion of the state coordinator. Please contact ASDSO or USACE Dam Safety Team for further information on the process of assigning NID ID numbers or if an alternative number sequence is necessary to meet the needs of the state.
