NAIP acquires digital ortho imagery during the agricultural growing seasons in the continental U.S.. A primary goal of the NAIP program is to enable availability of ortho imagery within one year of acquisition. NAIP provides two main products: 1 meter ground sample distance (GSD) ortho imagery rectified to a horizontal accuracy of within +/- 3 meters of reference digital ortho quarter quads (DOQQ's) from the National Digital Ortho Program (NDOP); and, 2 meter GSD ortho imagery rectified to within +/- 10 meters of reference DOQQs. The tiling format of NAIP imagery is based on a 3.75' x 3.75' quarter quadrangle with a 300 meter buffer on all four sides. NAIP quarter quads are formatted to the UTM coordinate system using NAD83. NAIP imagery may contain as much as 10% cloud cover per tile. This file was generated by compressing NAIP quarter quadrangle tiles that cover a county. MrSID compression, with mosaic option, was used. Target values for the compression ratio are (15:1) and the maximum compression zoom levels are used. Purpose: NAIP imagery may be distributed on an interim basis to meet USDA program requirements. The interim product is a compressed county mosaic. Users should be aware that the interim compressed county mosaic may contain defects and have horizontal accuracy less than the specified tolerances. Defective imagery may be replaced within one year of image acquisition date. Describe cloud cover, cloud shadow, haze or other flaws. Record the row and sample coordinates associated with each flaw for subsequent tracking. POS data records the position of the aircraft in space, taking into account any turbulence or similar motion effects. POS processing takes this positional data and reconciles it to the raw image data, thereby geo-referencing the imagery and effectively transforming it from a “picture” to a crude map. This step results in L0 imagery. The horizontal accuracy of the orthorectified imagery is primarily determined by the quality of the airborne GPS, Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) data and the surface model (digital elevation model or DEM). Rectify the Level0 imagery for the Pan-A sensor bands to an intermediate planar elevation. Rectification adjusts the imagery to account for known, optical characteristics that are inherent to the sensor platform. Automatic Point Matching processing operates against the fully minified Level-1 images. APM uses intelligent, optical pixel matching routines to detect common image points across pairs of overlapping images, including the forward, nadir and backward looking sensors, as well as adjacent image strips. APM processing derives a list of probable, matched points, and writes them out as terrain points in a supporting file to be used in subsequent ORIMA processing. ORIMA orientation Management processing is a fundamental component of photogrammetric processing for traditional, film-based frame aerial photography. The ORIMA software modifies and updates the processing for use in the context of line scanner digital imagery. ORIMA processing uses the terrain point data that was generated under APM to calculate image shift based upon fundamental principles of triangulation. Orthorectify images which means that the imagery is reconciled against a Digital Terrain Model (DTM); The DTM model used is the National elevation data set. The imagery will be adjusted to reflect terrain variations, and its horizontal geo-referencing is highly accurate. Perform thorough Quality Assessment of all Level-2 GeoTIFF images. Quantify horizontal accuracy at established, quarantined locations by comparing Level-2 coordinates to stereo pairs. Check all images for DTM (Digital Terrain Model) anomalies and DTM dropout. Record the coordinates associated with each error for subsequent tracking. Color balancing is performed to compensate for natural, east/west lighting variations in the imagery and daily lighting and humidity variances. A graduated adjustment of the brightness and contrast within the RGB spectrum using mosaicing software. Mosaicing software also corrects for slight horizontal discrepancies between adjacent flight line images, and performs automated adjustments to reduce visibility of seams. DOQQs are color and radiometrically balanced over a block consisting of a large number of images. A sample of DOQQs is selected and inspected for relative horizontal accuracy with the USDA furnished DOQQs. Completed and approved DOQQs are assembled into a countywide MrSID file, using a compression factor of 1:15.
