Description:

Abstract:: Locations of populated places not including incorporated cities or census designated places. This data was created using the US Geological Survey's Geographic Names (GNIS) file for Mississippi. In July 2009, MARIS staff added over 250 communities to this data layer using the MS DOT county highway maps.
Purpose:: Data were compiled as part of a statewide GIS repository effort.
Supplemental_Information:: This data is part of Phase II updates dated 1989 for Mississippi. Updates occured in July 2009.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:: Attribute values were validated via cross-checks with exisiting data resources including photographs, maps, imagery, and scientific reports.

Logical_Consistency_Report:

All line work is checked for topological integrity and to ensure that polygons are fully enclosed, no duplicate lines or points exists, line segments are composed of sequentially numbered coordinate pairs, intersecting lines are separated by a node, and no dangling lines exist. Topological checks and strucuturing are performed using the ArcInfo software. Data dictionary specification are automatically implemented via the ESRI Info database management software. Data collected from external data providers are randomly verified.

Process_Step:

Process_Description:: Data was created from the comma-delimeted ASCII file MS_deci.html containing x,y coordinate pairs. The coverage was then projected by MARIS staff from Lat/Long into MSTM. Populated places were extracted using the GNIS attribute type='ppl' meaning place or area with clustered or scattered buildings and a permanent human population. The points that were also incoroporated cities or census designated places were deleted using intersects with the cityi and cityp data layers.

MARIS staff used the MS DOT county highway maps to locate over 250 additional communites not on the GNIS file. This data was added using heads-up digitization with the MS 811 highways and streets layers as backgroung along with the 2007 Census places layer.
