A current, accurate spatial representation of all historic properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places is of interest to Federal agencies, the National Park Service, State Historic and Tribal Historic Preservation Offices, local government and certified local governments, consultants, academia, and the interested public. This interest stems from the regulatory processes of managing cultural resources that are consistent with the National Historic Preservation Act as Amended (NHPA), the National Environmental Policy Act as Amended, the Archaeological Resources Protection Act, and other laws related to cultural resources. The regulations promulgating these laws require the use of spatial data in support of various decisions and actions related to cultural resource management. Collectively, the National Register geo-spatial dataset is intended to be a comprehensive inventory of all cultural resources that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This dataset provides feature geometry representations (point, line, or polygon) and is intended to be supplemented with descriptive attributes maintained by other external database systems such as the National Register Information System which is included in this GeoDatabase. **** May 2022 MARIS staff downloaded the natioanl geodatabase, merged all the point data into one shapefile, then clipped on the state border. Certain attributes that were blank for all attributes were removed ** Description
The information contained in the feature attribute tables for this dataset is not descriptive. Rather the tables document how the data was created, where it came from, who created the data, what map parameters were used e.g. source scale, source accuracy, source coordinate system etc. Also included is information on the name of the resource, status of the resource i.e. does it still exist, is it restricted and what if any constraints are associated with the resource.
Please note that each historic property listed on the National Register has its own nominating history and therefore location information collected in the nominating process is different from one property to another. Therefore metadata has been created for each listed historic property to inform the potential user of the history or lineage of the spatial information associated with the historic property. Locations associated with restricted National Register of Historic Places properties are not included in this GeoDatabase and must be requested from the National Park Service, National Register Program. The metadata in the feature attribute table are compliant with the National Park Service’s Cultural Resource Spatial Data Transfer Standards. These standards were created to facilitate the exchange of spatial data within a variety of contexts, particularly Sections 106 and 110 of NHPA as well as in the context of disaster recovery events. Often locations of National Register listed properties are needed in these situations. The National Register Geo-spatial dataset is organized as a geo-database with feature class definitions based
on the National Register’s Resource Type designations i.e. historic buildings, historic districts, historic structures, historic objects, and historic sites. The definitions of these types can be found in National Register Bulletin 16A and in the metadata statements for each feature class. **** May 2022 MARIS staff downloaded the natioanl geodatabase, merged all the point data into one shapefile, then clipped on the state border. Certain attributes that were blank for all attributes were removed **

Properties listed on the National Register which are less than 10 acres are represented as points, while properties or districts which are more than 10 acres are delineated as polygons. All points and polygons are generated from coordinate pairs submitted with each individual National Register nomination. At this time, the quality and accuracy of the data is variable. Generally, listed historic properties represented as points (locations) are accurate to being placed in the appropriate county. Listed historic properties represented as polygons are far more problematic. Transcription errors and incorrect sequencing of bounding coordinates permeate this part of the dataset. Potential users are advised to carefully review the quality of the location and boundary of listed historic properties of interest to them before using this data. Subsequent releases of this dataset will seek to address these issues as time and funds are made available.

Supplemental information
The National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places provides irregularly updated snapshots of its NRIS database to the public and locational information is presented in a number of formats including the spatial.mdb database, and incomplete listing of resources currently listed on the National Register. The bulk of the spatial data contained within this geodatabase has been derived from either the coordinate pairs or physical addresses presented within spatial.mdb's POINT, and POLYGON tables. It is important to note that all of the features within spatial.mdb are incorrectly assumed to be in the UTM system with NAD27 datum. While it may be the case that
the vast majority of resources located in the contiguous USA with a certification date (CERTDATE filed in NRIS) prior to 1983, may likely be in this coordinate system, it is also probable that all other points were originally submitted for inclusion to the National Register using some other, more locally appropriate coordinate system or datum. The only currently available means for confirming a resources correct coordinate system or datum would be to pull the actual physical file at the NR or to view the scanned information online (in many cases, this information has yet to be uploaded into the National Park Service's Focus system.)

SCOPE OF THE UPDATES dataset
Scope description
Dataset
Newly listed properties will be added to the geo-database on a regular basis.
Features
Legacy data corrections to geometry will take place when time and funding are made available
Other maintenance requirements
This dataset's last significant update was applied from a July 2017 coordinate export from new NRIS. Only POINT features were added/updated. Poly/Linear features in the database have been considered to be of poor quality and NPS is currently deciding how best to address these issues in order to add those features to the dataset. New points (post 2014) have not been checked for accuracy against county boundaries.
Additionally, some features have since been removed from the dataset if they no longer hold a certification status of LISTED. Additional, minor updates are being selectively applied to the dataset by NPS personel to improve the quality of polygonal boundaries to better match the NR VERBAL boundary descriptions. Please see feature- level metadata for details.
Other maintenance requirements
In September, 2020, a minor update was applied to the dataset specifically to address National Historic Landmarks located in California, Oregon, and Washington State. NHL boundaries for unrestricted features were updated to help improve locational accuracy issues for just these features.
