Summary

Purpose of this project was to attribute the Road Segment layer with Street Name values.

Description

This feature class houses road centerlines for the State of Mississippi, attributed with Street Name. This was created as part of the MDEM Transportation Project initiated by Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality. The Road_Segment layer used for this project was provided by the Mississippi Department of Transportation. Original names gathered were collected by MDOT as they built the roads. Additional street names were collected from different sources such as County Street Centerline Data & Mississippi 811, formally Mississippi One Call data. At times public data such as Google Map, Yahoo Map were also used to cross verify.

Measure description

Attribute values were conflated to the Road_Segment layer from dependable source layers such as County Street Centerline Data & One Call Data. Segments were cleaned up to avoid any unnecessary breaks. Quality Checks were performed on the data to ensure the accuracy of the data entered by verifying the attributes with multiple sources when possible. Segments were cleaned up so that it goes from intersection to intersection.

Attributes were conflated from sources such as County Street Centerline Data & One Call data. Places where Street Name could not be assigned, an errata note was generated as a separate feature class in the same Geodatabase with detailed note as to what the error is.

Attribute Standardization - This was the last process where the attributes were verified for consistency such as road types are always in the correct field, RD type is always spelled the same, Prefix and Suffix are in the correct field and matches to the standard format etc.

Description

Attribute Migration - Required attributes such as street names were transferred from the best possible source to the target segment using ESRI attribute transfer tool under Spatial Adjustment Menu. Each line segments were temporarily coded as they are attributed and displayed thematically so that the status of completion was visible at any time during the process.

Segment Cleanup - All the segments were visited to make sure that it is a single segment from intersection to intersection. Places where the segments were shown broken because of bridges were connected to give a continuous flow.

Attribute QC - All the attributes that were transferred were cross verified using a different set of source if possible. Eg: Street names that were attributed using County Street Centerline Data were verified using One Call data during the QC so that if there is any conflict, it can be investigated and marked as an errata note if necessary. At times, even public data such as Google Map or Yahoo Map were also used to cross verify.
